Celebrating Our Volunteers!
The Executive Board of the Igbo Cultural Association of Edmonton (ICAE) extends its sincere and profound appreciation to the many individuals who have given their time, energy, and expertise in service to our community. Since the inception of our organization, volunteers have remained the bedrock upon which ICAE has grown and thrived. Their selfless contributions have sustained our programs, strengthened our cultural identity, and fostered a strong sense of unity and belonging.
We recognize that volunteering is not always easy. It often requires long hours, competing priorities, and, at times, personal sacrifice. Many of our volunteers have shown remarkable courage and resilience, stepping forward even in moments of fatigue and burnout, driven by a deep commitment to something greater than themselves. Their willingness to persevere through challenges speaks volumes about their character and their belief in the vision of ICAE.
What unites our volunteers is a shared purpose—a common goal to build, preserve, and celebrate our cultural heritage while supporting one another as a community. This collective commitment has translated into impactful programs, meaningful engagements, and a growing legacy that continues to benefit current and future generations.
The dedication demonstrated by our volunteers is both inspiring and foundational. Whether working behind the scenes or leading from the front, each contribution—no matter how small it may seem—has played a critical role in shaping the organization’s journey. It is this unwavering dedication that has allowed ICAE to remain vibrant, relevant, and community-driven.
As we commemorate Volunteer Appreciation Week 2026, the Board will be reaching out directly to individuals who have served over the past two years as a token of our gratitude. While these personalized acknowledgments are important, it is equally essential to publicly recognize and celebrate the enduring spirit of volunteerism that defines our organization.
Volunteerism is more than an act of service—it is a reflection of shared responsibility and collective progress. It builds empathy, strengthens social ties, and creates pathways for leadership and personal growth. In every sphere of life—within cultural associations, educational institutions, workplaces, and society at large—volunteering fosters collaboration and drives meaningful, lasting change. At the same time, it is important that we continue to promote a balanced and sustainable approach to service—one that acknowledges the reality of burnout and encourages shared responsibility, mutual support, and intentional appreciation.
As an organization, we remain committed to nurturing this culture of service while also ensuring that our volunteers feel valued, supported, and empowered. The continued success of ICAE depends on both the passion of its volunteers and the collective responsibility to sustain them.
To all our volunteers, past and present, we say thank you. Your courage, dedication, and commitment to a shared vision continue to shape our story in profound ways.
As Prime Minister Mark Carney recently noted in reflecting on an evolving global order, the future will be shaped not only by systems and structures but also by the choices and contributions of people working together toward a common purpose. In the spirit of this, we are reminded of an enduring Igbo proverb: “Igwe bu ike”—there is strength in unity. It is in coming together, even in the face of challenge, that communities find their true power and chart a path forward.
We remain grateful for the enduring support of our volunteers.
Warm regards,
Executive Board
