Call for Entries: 2026 ICAE Youth Essay Competition

The Igbo Cultural Association of Edmonton (ICAE) invites youth across Edmonton and surrounding communities to participate in the 2026 Youth Essay Competition, held in conjunction with the Biafra Heroes Memorial Celebration on May 30.

This is a chance to reflect on history, resilience, and leadership while honouring the legacy of those impacted by the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970).

Who Can Participate:

  • Junior High (Grades 7–9)

  • High School (Grades 10–12)

  • Post-Secondary Students

Essay Topics:

  • Junior High: What does “Never Again” mean in today’s world?

  • High School: The role of youth in preserving cultural memory in the diaspora.

  • Post-Secondary: Resilience after tragedy: Lessons from the Igbo experience.

Submission Details:

  • 500–1000 words

  • Word or PDF format

  • Include name, age, school, and contact information

  • Submit to: programs@icaedmonton.com

  • Deadline: May 18, 2026

Awards:
Winners will be recognized at the Memorial Celebration, with top essays featured in ICAE publications. Prizes include educational awards through the Biafra Heroes Memorial Scholarship Fund.
